It’s worth noting that this is subtly different to other terms: Lecturing focuses more on the delivery of information through talking. Teaching is more of an umbrella term which may include imparting knowledge, skills, understanding or experiences. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6abe2520536b800b9ef20bc8/ff55ae9c-0c08-4d58-bc0a-d538bc7f3822/kenny-eliason-1-aA2Fadydc-unsplash.jpg Blog - YOUR PERFECT TRAINER NEEDS MORE THAN JUST TRAINING SKILLS If more than half of the session is someone simply telling your students ‘stuff’, then you’ve accidentally booked yourself a lecture. Now, lectures can be excellent for learning – especially when it comes to knowledge and models. But simply hearing about something does NOT mean that your students have been trained. Avoid this by: Checking out the learning objectives in the training proposal. If there’s a heavy focus on to ‘know / understand / appreciate / be aware of’ then these sections might be lecture based. Make sure you are also seeing to ‘practice / apply / discuss / reflect / explore / use’. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6abe2520536b800b9ef20bc8/7f59a6b7-2c7f-47b4-815b-c5751b0d9f9a/SLI+Style+graphic+larger+border.png Blog - YOUR PERFECT TRAINER NEEDS MORE THAN JUST TRAINING SKILLS - Training: Explanation & instruction Understanding of tools and models Guided practice Trainer feedback Facilitation: Collaborative learning Peer support Peer feedback Sharing diverse experiences Coaching: Self awareness Personal context Ownership & responsibility Action planning And when all three components mix – that’s when you get something magical! https://www.thesli.co.uk/blog/using-a-learning-cycle-to-level-up-your-training monthly 0.5 2026-10-13 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6abe2520536b800b9ef20bc8/20b17e1a-e550-4936-915d-ee0f90f372d9/shutterstock_763473283.jpg Blog - USING A LEARNING CYCLE TO LEVEL UP YOUR TRAINING Training is all about helping people to learn and apply practical skills. When you think of effective training, I hope that you are imagining that your students are: engaged throughout learning new skills learning the associated knowledge to back it up are able to apply what they learned long after the training Unfortunately, it’s not that common for training to hit all of these criteria. In my experience, if you aren’t getting these results it’s generally down to these common barriers: https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6abe2520536b800b9ef20bc8/c6b454d1-a381-4999-9158-40f3a40bc434/P1010801_01.jpg Blog - USING A LEARNING CYCLE TO LEVEL UP YOUR TRAINING So, I kick things off with an unsuspecting ‘energiser’ or game that they think is just for fun. Depending on the purpose of the training it could be sending a message in a fast relay, listening to a story and then answering questions, communicating with their eyes closed, solving a team puzzle or even discussing a morality scenario. Straight away students are engaged because they get to do something (and they may bond in the process for an added bonus!) https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6abe2520536b800b9ef20bc8/44e76294-35f2-47a8-b06f-082d084dec48/Infographic+02..png Blog - USING A LEARNING CYCLE TO LEVEL UP YOUR TRAINING https://www.thesli.co.uk/blog/example-blog-three-t7npz monthly 0.5 2026-10-01 https://www.thesli.co.uk/blog/example-blog-two-jlj6t monthly 0.5 2026-10-13 https://www.thesli.co.uk/blog/example-blog-one-8958y monthly 0.5 2026-10-13 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6abe2520536b800b9ef20bc8/6e3650c6-ecfa-4b68-aae5-01191b81660a/shutterstock_1666872319.webp Blog - Blog Template 1 Donec quam felis, ultricies nec, pellentesque eu, pretium quis, sem.
